Joan Bryant

Bryant joined the SU faculty in 2007 to teach early African American history and religious history. Her experience and interest in African American archival collections and public history derive from her research in nineteenth-century racial practices and in eighteenth and nineteenth-century meanings of death. In teaching, she places a premium on developing students’ research and analytic skills and on putting historical research in conversation with broad social and political developments. Her courses thus incorporate historical methods exercises and draw from a broad array of textual, aural, and visual primary sources.
