The Maqoma Heritage Route, named after a Xhosa Chief of the amaRharhabe Kingdom, takes visitors on a journey into the spirit of self- assertion, self respect and dignity. It is a pilgrim route that traces the conflict between opposing forces and the lessons learned on the way to reconciliation. It is also about the moral power of education and liberation. The project aims at identifying, documenting, and marketing some of the most important historical sites, monuments and traditions that have occupied such a centre stage in the history and development of South Africa.
