Dr. Derrick L. Cogburn, COTELCO/IDPP Executive Director and Associate Professor at American University and Syracuse University, participated in one of the world’s longest running scientific conferences - the Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS) - from 4-7 January 2012 in Maui, Hawai'i. Dr. Cogburn co-chaired a mini-track session on global virtual teams, as well as participated in several workshops including the learning and analytics workshop, and the advances in technology and learning mini-track sessions.
The three-day conference, which was co-sponsored by the Shidler College of Business at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa and the IEEE, is one the of the most competitive and highly ranked information systems conferences in the world. The acceptance rate for papers is around 50%. This year, almost 600 papers were accepted, with over 900 participants. Many of the HICSS tracks are in line with several of COTELCO’s research themes, including Global Governance and Transnational Networks, Collaboratories and Cyberinfrastructure, and Geographically Distributed Collaborative Learning.
In addition to hosting a series of symposia, workshops, and tutorials, the HICSS conference featured a keynote address by Harvard University visiting fellow Mr. Vivek Kundra, former Chief Information Officer for the United States. Conference participants also heard from distinguished lecturer Dr. Doug Cutting, co-founder of Apache Hadoop on the challenges of big data.
